Goodbye, Edison

Edison. Eddy. Edders. Boy Cat. Tuftsy.

We had to say goodbye to my sweet Boy Cat. He was 12 years old and we'd had him for 10. Diagnosed with FIV, he caught colds frequently and lived 5 years longer than we'd anticipated. He made a miraculous recovery 5 years ago from a bought of illness, but he seemed weaker after and got sick more frequently.

2 nights ago, he started meowing loudly and pitifully. He seemed very upset and urgent. Gabe went down to the bottom of the basement stairs where he was and picked him up. As soon as he got to the top of the stairs, Edison sunk his claws into him and stiffened up.

After this episode, he lay panting on the floor. I finished up my shower and sat with him petting and soothing him while we discussed what was going on and what we should do. He was obviously in distress. After about 20 minutes we all got up and decided to sit on the couch and encourage him to sit with us. As I started to walk away he seized again and meowed those pitiful meows.

Ben made the decision to go ahead and put him down right away. We wanted him to be at home and forgo being in the carrier, being in the car, getting examined, etc. He hates all of those things and was stressed enough as it was.

Gabe and I bawled our eyes out and said our goodbyes. It was over quickly and we buried him the next day.

Here are some things about Edison:

He loved to snuggled. He was by far the most affectionate of our cats.

He loved to give headbutts when he was snuggling.

He loved his teal blanket. He was wrapped in it when he passed.

He loved to eat and had to have a special bowl to keep him from gorging himself.

He loved to chase shadows.

He was obsessed with the blue tinsel Gabe would use to decorate his bedroom during the holidays.

He loved to sleep on the back of the couch, behind the curtains in our bedroom, on the beanbag in Luke's room, and in the baskets on the cat tower.

I loved this cat so much and am so sad to see him go. I'm so glad we got to have him in our lives and were able to give him a good life. I wish it had been longer, but I'm sure I would have thought that no matter how old he lived to be.

Goodbye, sweet boy. You were so sweet to me!
