Random Reads: In Five Years

In Five Years by Rebecca Serle was a random read indeed. I selected it from the library simply because it was available right away. I love happy accidents!

The plot is centered on a ambitious lawyer who has her life all planned out until a dream? Prophecy? Vision? shows her the future and throws her into a tailspin. She struggles to come to grips with how different her future is from what she's always pictured it to be.

There are so many ways this story could have gone off the rails, but the author handled it well. It was mysterious yet believable, funny and heartbreaking, fantastical but totally relatable. There were some genuinely sad parts that could have felt like cheap emotional manipulation, but were deftly handled by Serle.

And I loved the surprise ending.
