Homemade Laundry Detergent

I've been making my own laundry detergent for years now and I really like it. It doesn't have any scent like store-bought detergent (courtesy of chemicals), nor does it leave your clothing blindingly white (courtesy of chemicals), but it DOES get the clothing clean. And for an unbeatable price and very little work.

Here's a little hint of my own; instead of grating the soap which takes a lifetime, simply cut it with a knife. The soap is pretty brittle so you can use a large knife to make very thing slices which sort of crumble as you go. It melts down very well and saves a bunch of time.

Everything you want to know about this detergent can be found here.

Here's what the soap looks like once you've poured it all into a container:

You can't tell from that picture, but I use an old cat litter bucket. Perfect size and very sturdy. Not very glamorous, though. Oh well. :)

It will gel up quickly, but leave it overnight or so. Then, take a large spoon and mix it all up. The final consistency will be something between a liquid and a solid. Mix it up well and you shouldn't have any problems!

One batch will last us for four months or so, which is great!
